Meaning of ohr

ohr (ore, Hebrew אוֹר) v. to be the light

ohr is a Hebrew word which means to be the light. What does it mean to be the light?

Light is a common metaphor for righteousness and goodness. Therefore to be the light is to reflect righteousness and goodness in who we are and all that we do, and impact our surroundings as a result

Our foundation

ohr was founded on principles of creativity and collaboration in engineering, at a time when we felt the Malaysian built environment could benefit from it

We believe that engineering can and should be creative. Amazing feats of engineering throughout history were borne out of creativity, by people who stepped up to challenge the norm

Creativity should not be reserved for special undertakings. Rather, the simplest and most mundane tasks, through to the most complex will all benefit from a touch of it. Creativity is the essence of efficiency and excellence

We believe that collaborative effort in all we do and by all who are involved is fundamental to an amazing outcome

With collaboration comes trust, commitment, integrity, open communication, transparency, mutual respect and inclusiveness. At ohr, equality comes into the equation too, as we believe all people are created equal

All that we do is underpinned by this creative and collaborative approach and is reflected in the solutions that we provide

Now, when creativity and collaboration are embedded in everything we do, fun inevitably ensues. And why can't and shouldn't work be fun? Again, let's challenge and change the norm in our country

This is why at ohr we say, let's engineer it differently. But we look forward to the day when this way of doing engineering in Malaysia is no longer an exception but rather, the norm

Our culture

A clean and ethical living

As a member of the Unashamedly Ethical campaign, we are committed to a clean and ethical living. By this we are committed to being honest and ethical in all our dealings; to provide efficient, economic and effective products and services in an impartial manner; to provide all stakeholders with timely, accessible and accurate information; to refuse to elicit, accept or pay any bribes, and to report those who do; to negotiate all contracts with the utmost integrity; to pay taxes, and to pay all creditors on time; to pay reasonable salaries and wages; to submit ourselves to just and ethical governing authorities; to remember the poor by investing generously and sacrificially in the broader community; to collaborate with our peers to impact our community and nation

People-centric

We openly communicate and have dialogues

We are transparent in our decision making

We do not control or dictate, but provide context, insights and understanding

We value team players. We help each other be great. We do not tolerate office politics, unhealthy competition and any other mistreatment of people

We value work-life balance. We manage our work and work smart to achieve this

If you are a people leader,

Your most important task is to build a great team and carry and spread The Vision

You lead by example, be articulate, inspiring and perceptive

You provide clear directions

Enjoyable office space

The office is clean, tidy and clutter-free. This includes desktops, storage and common spaces. Aesthetics is maintained. We are collectively responsible for this. We clean and tidy up after ourselves, each and every time

We create a relaxed, friendly, comfortable, pleasant and respectful atmosphere

We are mindful of the personal privacy and space of our teammates

We refrain from activities that will distract or adversely affect others working

Care for the environment

We care for the environment. We consider the impact of our actions, and eliminate and reduce detrimental impact where possible. This includes water, energy and paper consumption

Environmental impact is considered in arriving at engineering solutions, and we champion sustainable design at all possible opportunities

Thirst for learning

We maintain a thirst for learning, and with that, improving

We openly share everything, even mistakes, and collectively learn, at all levels

We continuously improve our knowledge of engineering, the built environment and the business. Creativity in our engineering approach is only possible with a sound knowledge of the subject

High performance

We care about creating great work; mediocrity and complacency will not be tolerated

We are passionate about our work

Once clear and specific strategies are set, we proactively work towards achieving these without the need for undue control and monitoring

We plan and manage our own development. We create an environment that allows self-development through experience, observation, introspection, study and discussion

Freedom and responsibility

We believe in increasing employee freedom rather than limiting it, as restricting freedom stifles creativity and prevents genuine commitment to ohr

We enable this through a culture of high performance and self-discipline, where people are treated as adults and are expected to behave as adults

Some examples of adult like behavior;

Being responsible: self motivated, self aware, self disciplined, self improving, acting like a leader, not waiting to be told what to do

Conducting oneself with honesty and integrity, such as not abusing the flexible working hours and sickness policy

Acting in ohr's best interest on all matters, such as being frugal about expenses and rapidly highlighting and fixing mistakes

What it means to be part of the ohr family

As part of the ohr family, in your work and work life (if not your life as a whole) you will bear our DNA, being the light of righteousness and goodness impacting your surroundings, underpinned by our foundation and culture

Are you ready to engineer it differently?
